Charles Reid

Job: Presently serves as a Career Development Specialist for Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont at the corporate site located in Charlotte. He also serves as Senior Pastor of God's Meeting Place, Charlotte.

Belmont ties: He has lived in Belmont most of his life, with the exception of his matriculating at Hampton University, Hampton, Va., where he obtained his B.A. degree in history. Outside of a few years of Charlotte apartment living, before building his home in Belmont, he estimates it to be 45 years of his being a “Belmontian.”

I live here because ... it is the place of my early nurturing as a child. I enjoy the people, the “hometown atmosphere,” and the close proximity to a large, growing, metropolitan city, such as Charlotte.

My hometown is special because ... my mother and all three of my brothers live in Belmont; and I have aunts, uncles, and many cousins living here, as well. There is a strong sense of community in Belmont. I feel connected with the community at large.

Something people might not know about me ... my first attendance in the public schools of Gaston County was at Reid School, more commonly called Reid High School, named after my grandfather, the late Professor Charles Jesse Bynum Reid (grandmother and Prof. Reid's wife, the late Mrs. Maude Herndon Reid).

I'm proud of ... being the first grandchild to build a home on family property of my deceased maternal grandparents, the late Mr. Esco and Mrs. Pearl Torrence Hand. I live on Pearl Hand Drive.

My favorite thing about my town is ... Belmont, for the most part, is a peaceful, serene and pleasant “home” town. There are opportunities for community involvement by way of the Belmont Mass Choir, Belmont Neighborhood Partners, and other avenues of service. Belmont offers higher education opportunities through Gaston College East Campus and Belmont Abbey College. Downtown Belmont, with Stowe Park in the very midst, gives you a tie to our historical past.

If I ever left, the thing I'd miss most is ... the close ties of family and friends.

The future of my town is ... great and exciting!
