DiningWant to explore new places to eat? Gaston has much to offer. Lotus Bar and Eatery at 1941 Hoffman Road has created a tantalizing menu with must-try items like cedar-baked Alaskan salmon, pan-seared jumbo sea scallops and fresh fettuccini tossed with wild mushrooms. Sunday's brunch offerings include classic eggs Benedict and a version made with crab cakes. Omelet fillings are just as tasty — caramelized onions, shaved prosciutto and roasted red peppers. One of the newest restaurants specializing in cuisine from our neighbors to the south is Mount Holly Mexican Restaurant. Rafael Manjarrez, an already successful businessman, opened the eatery in the former Gussie's Coffee Shop at 108 Beaty Road. European bistro meets the land of the rising sun at J's Japanese Bistro. The 3272 Union Road restaurant brings Shabu Shabu to Gastonia. Sometimes known as hot pot, thin slices of meat or seafood are brought to the table along with boiling broth; hence, the name. The meat is swished around the liquid fondue style. There are vegetables and dipping sauce to go with it. Cruise on over to Bessemer City for steak and seafood in a lodge-like atmosphere. Surf & Turf at 808 North 14th Street is becoming known for its rustic décor and solid meals. On the other side of the county, Belmont's Old Stone Steakhouse is another great option for the classic datenight dinner. Along with the ribeye, filet mignon and New York strip, there's plenty to keep the pasta and poultry set happy as well. Located on South Main Street, the restaurant overlooks Stowe Park. For the best view, opt for the deck. And there are plenty of other restaurants to choose from in the downtown area. Want variety for the family? Lighthouse Cove at 1127 W. Charlotte Ave., Mount Holly is serving wraps, burgers and sandwiches along with chicken, beef and pork dishes. There are even some Greek specialties on the menu. Got a big appetite but no time to sit down for dinner? Cook Out, a North Carolina chain, is now offering charcoal grilled burgers, barbecue and foot-long hot dogs at its East Franklin Boulevard location just below the Cox Road intersection. Trying to stay on the cardiologist's good side? Sprouts Café at 1012 South New Hope Road located below Organic Marketplace is offering a menu with lots of raw choices. There's also coffee and tea, soups, vegetarian wraps and sandwiches. The restaurant will even teach you to cook some of those goodies during regularly scheduled classes. The veggies aren't the only thing green at Sprouts. Plates and paper products are biodegradable. Southern food means more than grits and pintos at Makenzie's. Chef Isaac West, a Johnson & Wales grad, is offering Southern regional cuisine ranging from the Mississippi Delta and Cajun country to the Florida Keys and the Gulf. Influences also include low country Savannah and Charleston along with the Appalachians. Grouper fingers, gumbo and buffalo meatloaf are just a few of the treats on the menu. All those savory meals got you ready for dessert? Check out Bruster's Real Ice Cream at 1605 Neal Hawkins Road. Featured flavors flow with the seasons — berries for summer; autumn brings apple, caramel and pumpkin; December means eggnog, peppermint and rum raisin; fudge and mocha warm up January; and as a salute to George Washington, cherries are the hit for February. So pull up a chair and enjoy discovering all the good food there is to eat here in Gaston County. |
