Harold Rankin

Age: 80

Children: Son, Jerry Rankin

Community involvement: Lifetime member of the advisory board for the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, member of Belmont American Legion Post 144, member of Lowell Optimist Club

Job: Retired mayor of Lowell

Has lived in town since: 1927

I live here because … I was born and raised here in a place where there was nothing but fields. After the war, I came back here and finally got a job in 1948. I went to work for the Duke Power Sub Station.

My hometown is special … because it’s a small town and everybody knows everybody and loves everybody.

My favorite thing about my town … is that we’re known as a patriotic city. We try to keep the flags flying.

If I ever left, the thing I’d miss most … is the people. They’re my friends. They’re there when I need them day and night. If I’m sick, they know I live alone, so I can call on them and they take me places.

The future of my town is … I see it as more of a residential section with more new homes one day. It’ll be a larger population. That’ll make Lowell be more recognized.
